Arrived in Rome this afternoon. Only 4 days until I go home and I am SOOO excited! I think I need a few shopping trips and a hundred fashion magazines as a reward for my perseverance. It’s been a long summer without fashion.

Short and sweet. I miss heels! I haven’t worn a pair in sooo long. I went to the outlets last week. Prada, Gucci, Stella, Alexander McQueen. Wow. I tried on some gorgeous shoes. So know I am saving up and going to Rome for a couple of days at the end of August and hopefully I’ll have enough to get something nice too!

Ok, now it’s time to admit that I have some serious commitment issues. It’s been over two weeks since I last updated and I didn’t even realise! Whatever. I’m having such a good time, despite being worked to the bone. I think I’ve learnt a couple life lessons…and how to do my own washing! Somehow I didn’t think my life could be consumed by anything other than fashion, which has totally taken over my life for the last year. But here there is no time for that and it’s actually been lovely to give up on following the trends for the past two months. I’ve been rocking the bleached out hair, freckles and cut offs look for quite sometime now and I don’t think I can give it up!

Hello lovely people! I think I have finally settled in now. My shopping cravings have been quenched slightly and I’m a lovely shade of pink thanks to the 40 degree weather! I’ve been moved from the bar to the restaurant which means I have more time to spend at the pool during the day. Its been at least a month since I’ve looked at any fashion blogs, so I feel completely out of the loop. Come September though, I’ll be back with a bang! Just a little video for your enjoyment…I think we can all relate to it. Have a nice week!

Wow. Looking back at these photos that we took makes me feel really sad. I’ve been away for five whole weeks now which seems like a long time. I absolutely love this playsuit. It’s the perfect day to night piece of clothing. Amazing. Tomorrow I have a day off and I’m so wrecked. Think it’s a swimming pool day with a nice meal after which does NOT include pasta. I’d actually do anything for a spud!

Along with my outfit posts, I have decided to share with you some of my favourite videos. This video, Western Spaghetti is one of many by PES. I’m in complete awe. I am cheating a little, because I can’t upload any photos. I forgot the camera cable! Though to be honest the only photos I have taken here so far include peoples strange tan lines and my friends hacking at the iceberg in my fridge. Somehow I don’t think either are fashion worthy. I am getting serious shopping cravings…I miss clothes! However living on a mountain means I can’t get my fix. More improvements though as I got my laptop!

Thanks Daddy and Happy Father’s Day!

Rebecca Flanagan interview

Rebecca Flanagan is one of Ireland’s most successful up and coming fashion designers. With a line in River Island and many other awards under her belt, she is soon to become a household name. She took some time out of her busy schedule to answer some questions and show us some of her amazing collection.

Can you give a background to yourself?

I studied Fashion Design at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. During my graduate year I was nominated for several fashion design awards and competitions. I was a finalist for the Persil Irish Fashion Awards in 2009 and later that year I went on to win the River Island Graduate Bursary award.

Companies which I have worked for include the high street giant River Island, contemporary Irish fashion designer Joanne Hynes and the Irish Quinn and Donnelly label. I also had work experience with Katherine E Hamnett in London.

As a freelance stylist and I have collaborated with many established musicians, talented photographers, hair stylists and make-up artists. I am also the fashion consultant for the Dublin based company Kamalifestyles, whom I have also written articles for relating to style, image and the psychology of attraction.

Describe the overall aesthetic of your designs.

Attention to detail, luxury and experimental material is the overall aesthetic of my creations. “Resin” is the title of my graduate degree collection. It embodies a grungy style, met with luxurious, feminine and delicate undertones. My visual research explored imagery of light on black textures, inspiring the idea of playing with contrasts. Reflection and absorption of light is created in textured and treated surfaces of black; a dominant shade throughout the collection. Garments of soft and sensual textures are paired with hard-wear embellishment and a myriad of blacks creating a rich and layered look.

What about your fashion/design background? How did you come to establish yourself?

After Graduating from Fashion Design at the NCAD I received extensive media coverage from the graduate fashion show, the NCAD graduate exhibition, the Persil design awards and especially when I won the River Island Graduate Bursary Award.
Being a graduate of such a renowned college and having success with such prestigious design awards really launched me into the Industry and helped me build contacts and gain the necessary experience I needed.
After my contract with River Island I was approached and commissioned by many creatives in Ireland as a stylist and a fashion consultant.

The collection covers everything from clothes to accessories. Which do you prefer to make and why?

I am a clothing designer who has recently experimented with accessories. I design one around the other so that the design doesn’t take way from the each other. When I am designing accessories, the piece itself is the statement and I design a garment to mount it on. Similarly when I am designing couture pieces I only design a jewellery piece to complement the garment.

You recently had some experience with River Island, can you tell us about it?

In River Island I designed products and garments in the Ladies Design and Accessories Department in the areas of blouses, lingerie, loungewear, jewellery, bags, scarves, hats, shoes and belts. My graduate portfolio showed strong potential for design in the area of Top Store luxury lingerie. Along with meeting project deadlines from different departments within River Island, I had the opportunity to develop my own collection of lingerie and loungewear, which was proposed to the head of design for production approval. Being part of such a huge company with many different departments I had to learn quickly how to produce specification and dimension packs for suppliers. I worked closely with many of the designers constructing samples for suppliers and press. I also worked with a team on trend research and development. I created both hand drawn and digital prints and I excelled in embellishment, producing new embellishment designs.

Has it helped your success?

Absolutely, It taught me everything I needed to know for starting in the industry and professional practice. There I learnt how to do print design which is what I am currently working in now for Joanne Hynes.

What celebrity would you like to design for and why?

I would design a garment for Debbie Harry, she is so quirky, beautiful and she will be remembered as being the ultimate rock chick Icon!

Tuscan life is amazing. Though I really miss my laptop. I can’t check out all my favourite blogs because internet access is limited where I am. I guess it’s probably good for me in the long run though! My Italian is also coming along well. Tomorrow I have my day off so I’m planning a day of shopping in Florence and maybe a coffee at the Duomo. If I don’t leave the campsite on my days off I get serious cabin fever. Anyone have any recommendations from Florence?

Well, I’m finally getting a chance to update. I’m sorry it’s taken so long. I’ve been working 8 hour shifts for the past six days and I’m exhausted. I won’t get a day off until next Friday either but the weather is nice and I’m enjoying it nonetheless. These are the first of the shots I took in Dublin before I left. I haven’t taken any so far in Tuscany, but when I do they’ll go up straight away…promise! Hope all of your holidays have gotten off to a good start or if you’re working that it’s not too hard.

My first video post! It’s not quite as polished and professional as some others I’ve seen…but it’s only the beginning. I didn’t quite know what to do, so please excuse the random activity. I’m not even wearing anything particularly interesting except maybe the turban headband. I bought two of these from an Etsy shop called Babooshka. They are greatest thing for covering up bad hair! But I thought I might share this with you all for the laugh anyway. The song is, ‘Dearest’ by Buddy Holly.

Also, if you look to the right of my blog header you will see a new button labelled “Archive” where you can click to gain easy access to any of my older posts. A big thanks to Martin who has been the genius behind this. Only three days until my big adventure! I’m getting excited now.
